Amateur Radio - W3DVX

Although I haven't been on the air that much lately, I do stay busy building and repairing ham radio equipment, typically from Elecraft. Recently I did get started in digital communications with PSK31.

If ham radio is something you've always wanted to get into, I can give you some insight on getting started. Drop me a note using the "Contact Me" button. Check the "Other Books" section (menu above) for ARRL publications that can get you started.

The "Links of Interest" have a number of useful places you might want to visit to get started in ham radio. Make the ARRL your first stop.

Alan at NC-183D and a Viking II

Dad was into photography, and he took this one a few years ago. That's a National NC-183D and, to the right, an E.F.Johnson Viking II.

WithElecraft-120Decades later, I built my first Elecraft K2, number 1077. This photo is in my shop where most of the building is done.

An early station in the 1950s. On the left, a Hallicrafters SX-99 receiver; on the right a WRL Globe Scout transmitter (about 90 w input). The Heath VFO is in the middle.

Searching for more power, I traded in the Globe Scout. The Viking II was good for 180 w on CW, and about 130 w on AM phone (160-10 meters).

The final configuration was the addition of the NC-183D. It was an impressive receiver, but it wasn't long before I wished I had bought a Collins 75A-4 instead. Later equipment included the Drake 2B, and the Kenwood Twins.
