Portable Battery Pack

Steve, KC2VNI, sent me some project boxes to build him a couple portable battery packs ... something that would go nicely with the SWL Rock-Mite. The primary concerns were weight and the amount of time that the radio would be used for RX and TX. Here's the result, a project you can build too if you like the concept.

This is the finished result ... battery pack, adapter cable, and the Rock-Mite.Battery box with Rock-Mite

When we open the box, you can see 8 AA batteries that are in a plastic holder with a snap connector. The holder is on top of a thick foam pad, so that when the cover is closed, the batteries are held firmly in place without rattling around.

View with the box open.

View with the batteries removed.
With the battery holder removed, you can see the simple connection to a fuse holder. The fuse-holder wires go through a hole in the box to power-pole connectors.

The parts that I used for this little project are ...

Radio Shack 270-1803 Project Box:  5" x 2.5" x 2"
Radio Shack 270-407A "AA" Battery Holder (for 8 batteries)
Radio Shack 270-0324 Battery Snap Connectors
Radio Shack 270-1238 Inline Fuse Holder

Other material: heat-shrink tubing, grommet in hole, tie wrap for wire to keep it from being pulled from the box, foam padding, power-pole connectors.
