Flex 6400 with ATU, 100 Watt HF SDR. $1699, free shipping CONUS

This rig is for sale on behalf of a friend, W2MDE. He’s had the radio since new in spring 2018, and offered it to me because he’s not using it. It needs a computer and free software to use, and I tried it out on my shop Windows PC. It works perfectly, and although I do computers, I really prefer to use the knobs and buttons on my K3S.

======================================================

Elecraft LPA ($125) and two KSYN3 boards ($125 ea or $195 for the pair), free shipping CONUS

======================================================

Lab power supply: HP 6111A

SALE: Make an Offer!

Thumb wheels set voltage, but a bit off; meter shows correct voltage though.
Weight about 12 lbs before packing.
Make an Offer … I want this gone!

Apple iWatch, 44mm Series 5, GPS + Cellular, Space Gray Aluminum with black sport band. Comes to you with original charger, cable, medium and small bands. $295, free shipping CONUS

SOLD eBay $165

After 4 years of great service with no problems, I’m selling. No scratches or damage. Since new, it’s been in the clear-plastic Zagg protection you see in the photos. The iWatch is Model A2095 type MWW12LL/A. It has the cellular option, and if you add it to your plan, you can make/receive cell calls or text with it. It runs the standard Apple apps after you set it up; it’s been reset to start up like new with your credentials. Any questions? Email or phone (cell/text).

Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera, accessories, case

SOLD eBay $295. Lowered SALE: $195, free shipping CONUS

Like many of you, I’ve been into photography for ages, and this D5100 was the last purchase I made of a “real” camera. That was back in 2011 when $900 bought quite a bit more than today. Since then, I’ve been using my iPhone more and more for my photos: it’s so much more convenient for those quick shots-of-opportunity. The iPhone quality still does not compare to the great Nikon photos, and I’ll miss that; your opportunity though!

The specs, in great detail, are at the official Nikon site. You might need to search.

In addition to the items shown in the first image, there are several filters including a polarizing filter, extra memory cards, cables to download images, small tripods, etc. All is in like-new condition, used very little. Any questions, feel free to text, call, or eMail me.

Even with cameras, your satisfaction is always assured with the W3DVX guarantee.

Apple iMac, 27″ Retina 5K display, All-in-One Desktop Computer, MF886LL/A
SOLD – a bargain at $400.

After being my main computer since early 2015, now it’s time time for me to offer the iMac a new home. It’s in excellent shape, and I upgraded it in 2020 from 8 GB to 32 GB memory. It has dual microphones, stereo speakers, and an HD camera for FaceTime or Zoom. It has built-in Wi-Fi. The Fusion hard drive is 1 TB; CPU is quad-core Intel Core i5 at 3.5 GHz. The system has been erased and reloaded with a new download of Big Sur.

The connectors on the rear: Headphones, SDXC memory card, four USB 3 sockets, two mini-Display (Thunderbolt 2) ports, Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45.

I have the original box for shipping, but much better if you can pick it up.

  • KPA3
  • KAT3

With all good intentions of making a home for a Windows PC here in my Apple ecosystem, I just can’t use a non-MacOS machine effectively. I tried for a couple years. Time to move this nice laptop along to someone who prefers the Windows environment.

There are a number of ham programs that I loaded, and I’ll probably leave them installed for you.

Any questions, feel free to text, call, or eMail me.

Your satisfaction is always assured with the W3DVX guarantee.

======================================================

David Clark H10-20 Aviation Headset, connector adapter, case

SOLD: $115, free shipping CONUS

This headset has some history about it. When I was first learning to fly in the summer of 1991, my first flights were using David Clark headsets that were with the Cessna 172s that I rented. It didn’t take too long to want my own personal headset—and this is the one I bought. I’ve not flown in the last few years, and I really don’t need to keep it.

It’s the perfect headset for the ham who uses headphones with a mic boom attached. Perfect for use in noisy environments—the cockpit of a 172 is LOUD—and when you put these on, all is quiet. The microphone ignores background sound, and you speak close to the mic. It’s an M-7A electret mic, which does need bias; the K2 needs a 5.6K resistor (probably already there if you use Elecraft MH2, 4 etc.) Tested with my K4 with bias turned on.

The adapter in the photo makes the jump from the aircraft plug to the socket of the K2, 3, 4. You might need to use an adapter for the mono phone plug, which is not stereo.

All’s in excellent condition except for the case, which is serviceable but a tad worn. The mic foam was replaced a few years ago and seems as new. Any questions, feel free to text, call, or eMail me.

Your satisfaction is always assured with the W3DVX guarantee.

Clarinet: Jean Paul CL-350, CL-4 Mouthpiece, Rico H Ligature, case

SOLD $125, free shipping CONUS

Last May, 2022, I thought I’d relearn the clarinet … after all, how much could I have forgotten since I was 12 or 13 just starting high school? As it turned out, quite a bit, like everything. After diligently practicing for a half-hour every day for six months, I just wasn’t finding the pleasure of making music getting any closer.

The CL-350 is what Jean Paul calls their “Step-Up Student Clarinet.” After corresponding with J-P, I decided on the CL-350 because it has synthetic pads that seal better and last longer than fish-skin pads on the (more expensive) CL-400. So, I did the next best option and bought the CL-4 mouthpiece + the Rico H ligature, both of which are used with the CL-400. That option turned out quite well.

More info on the CL-350 is on the Jean Paul site.

All is in like-new condition, used very little. Any questions, feel free to text, call, or eMail me.

Your satisfaction is always assured with the W3DVX guarantee.

  • KIO3
  • KSYN3
  • Add other modules? I can do so if you wish.

Selling this K3 for $1385, plus $50 shipping CONUS.
I’ll quote you on any other modules you want to add. I now have a KIO3B available.

Proper performance and your satisfaction are always assured with the W3DVX guarantee.

======================================================

Elecraft K3-1117 — SOLD at asking 11/8/2022

This K3 is one that I recently acquired for temporary use in my shop. No surprise: it needed a few repairs to get it up to my standards for a fine rig. Mechanically, it’s clean with only a few minor dings you’d not notice; it’s very good considering its age. Electrically, it’s up-to-specs in all regards. I’ve had it on the air, and its maximum output is over 10 watts CW and SSB: it made contacts using my 43′ vertical.

Some of the work I’ve done on the rig:

  • Completed full calibration per the K3 manual.
  • Installed new finals in the Low-Power Amplifier (the LPA).
  • Replaced the RIT encoder that had its shaft and knob broken in shipping.
  • Replaced the small AF and RF volume knobs; early knobs cracked when tightened.
  • Replaced the LCD plexiglass cover with new.
  • Verified that the “gold-pin” KPA3 mod had been done on the main RF board.

Installed components:

  • Five-pole 2.7 kHz filter,
  • KXV3-1 Rev B
  • KIO3A Rev A
  • KSYN3 Rev A
  • Add other modules? I can do so if you wish.

Selling the K3 itself for $895, plus $50 shipping CONUS.
The KBPF3 is $250 extra; if you buy with the K3, I’ll install for you.
The 400Hz filter is $75 extra; I’ll install and reconfigure the filter setup for you.
I’ll quote you on any other modules you want to add.

As always, I’m negotiable on prices here; text or call me.

Elecraft K2 — SOLD 6/21/2021

Servicing many Elecraft legacy products gives me the opportunity to pick up various parts and assemblies. This K2 is truly unique: it’s an older RF main board that I’ve totally reworked and updated (from Rev.A to Rev.B); the Control Board plus Front-Panel Board plus the front panel itself are actually new. Firmware is all current except the KSB2, which is rev 1.07, and totally functional. The K2 has: KAT2 antenna tuner (new, built by me), KSB2 for SSB and digital, battery option (no battery), and “K2 Internal Mic Adapter” configured for Heil (Table 1 in the KSB2 docs).

It comes with the plug-ins in photos. $75, free shipping lower 48. Will consider offers … it doesn’t need to be in a box for another 10 years!

Well, in the early days it was AM, and from there SSB; I was one of the few kilowatt 40-meter SSB stations on in the mid-to-late ’50s. That was when TVI was a bit of a problem, except that I did a lot of my operation during the daytime after school or on days off. Instead of TVI, I managed to put my audio on a neighbor’s PA system, right in the middle of a funeral. (I was off the air pronto after that escapade!)

Fast forward to a couple years ago when I first setup my K2-5373 for PSK31. One of my first difficulties was to have a constant-level audio. If I took the audio from the speaker or headphone jack, my waterfall would change every time I adjusted the AF gain control. That led me to a project where I ran the product-detector output directly to the rear panel. See the page and photos.

As soon as I collect my photos from my former (hacked) site, I’ll add that to the Digital Radio drop-down menu.

Enjoy!

Blitz in his favorite chair by the window.

Blitz in his favorite chair by the window.

Good memories of one special Boxer, Schnitzel, stay with me. My parents brought her home from a kennel up near Seneca Lake when I was about eight or nine. She was great company on walks and out in the country. Typical Boxer: happy, playful, loyal, loving. And she did NOT like porcupines. You’d think, after coming back home with a mouthful of quills, she’d know not to fool with porcupines; nope, she must have been looking for revenge, and repeated the same mistake. That was the last time we let her run in the woods by herself.

Fast forward a couple decades. I decided to get my own Boxer and do dog shows. Happy Boy was my show dog, and he won a number of ribbons while he was still a puppy. But when he reached his first birthday, he had to compete against champions, and he didn’t do so well. He was a great dog, and with his laid-back disposition, he was good company.

Fast forward more decades. Being in the computer industry, I have some skills in PHP and MySQL database programming, so I decided to help the AABR in their efforts to rescue Boxers. My contribution was to write the back-end web programming to process the many adoption applications that are submitted daily. Now when a hopeful adopting family submits an application, an AABR volunteer can view the questionnaire and track its approval process through to a successful adoption. My help to the Boxers.

Around that same time, I knew it was time for another Boxer, and Leah came to the Wilcox household. She had spent her first five years in a dog crate at some puppy mill in southeastern Pennsylvania. It took me over a year to get her to the point of acting like a Boxer, and I have nothing good to say about puppy mills. Never buy a dog from a store; buy from a reputable kennel. Leah’s life story is on the AABR website.

Because Leah was having difficulties learning how to act like a dog, after some months I also adopted Blitz. He was an excellent dog, and he set a proper example for Leah to follow.

Blitz missed Leah after her sad departure (read about that in her life story), and it was time to adopt Daisy. After some initial “adjustments” by alpha-dog Blitz, Daisy settled into her role of Second Boxer. They both enjoyed walks, and quickly learned to walk beside each other on my left side without pulling.

Their home split up after awhile, and they both needed to resettle elsewhere. It worked out well for them, thanks to the efforts of the AABR once again.

What’s the take-away here? If you’re a Boxer or dog fan, support the AABR anyway you can. They do a wonderful job helping the unfortunate Boxers in our society find good forever homes.

The Library https://wilcoxengineering.com/2014/03/01/the-library/ https://wilcoxengineering.com/2014/03/01/the-library/#respond Sat, 01 Mar 2014 22:26:36 +0000 https://wilcoxengineering.com/?p=57 [read the full article...]]]> Maybe it’s just me, or do all engineers have an affinity for books?

If I go into a Barnes & Noble, I’m likely to come out with a book or two. Usually something really cool, like programming or maybe about computers. Sometimes I manage to ask myself if I really need the book: then I might put it down until the next visit. Left to my natural inclinations, I continue to build an ever-higher “books to read” pile next to my reading chair. I enjoy learning new things, and each new book is a treasure waiting for me to explore. They’ll all so interesting, I usually have three or four going at the same time: I read one for awhile, then restart on another.

Volunteering is also something I find rewarding. I’ve enjoyed Boxers since I was in grade school, and I found a way to do something for unfortunate dogs who need new homes: adoption. So, several years ago, I wrote web-site code to assist the AABR – Adopt A Boxer Rescue. The AABR has a 150-question form for the potential adopter to fill out and show they’ll provide a good home. My contribution was to pull the application into a database and provide a way to manage/track each application. Thousands of applications. (I also adopted several Boxers, but that’s another story!)

Okay, so where does the library come in? I decided to do more volunteering and help at our local library, Williamsport’s J.V. Brown Library. I go there several hours a week and help out as needed: shelving books, helping patrons find books, setting books in order, monitoring the floors. Nothing heavy duty, but I get to see hundreds of books. If I see something interesting, I stop and read awhile; if it’s really riveting, then I check it out and bring it home.

The library is an all-around win for me:

  • I can volunteer and give something back to our community,
  • I can discover books that I’d never otherwise find, and
  • I can borrow rather than purchase.

If you’ve never thought about volunteering at your library, check into it. It’s a vital resource for educating the younger generations, and they can always use more support.

Why and how I got into eBooks https://wilcoxengineering.com/2014/02/24/why-and-how-i-got-into-ebooks/ https://wilcoxengineering.com/2014/02/24/why-and-how-i-got-into-ebooks/#respond Mon, 24 Feb 2014 21:23:20 +0000 https://wilcoxengineering.com/?p=40 [read the full article...]]]> When I finished writing my engineering memoirs in summer 2010, my first thought was to go back to Prentice Hall. I had written four computer-engineering books for them in the mid-1980s, so they were my first call. That didn’t work out so well: when I talked with my former acquisition editor, his bad news was that PH only did textbooks. So, after shopping around awhile, I concluded that I’d not find a publisher to do my latest, especially because I’m not a nationally-known celebrity. Ah, well.

What would a computer engineer do? You’re right, I decided to publish it myself on Amazon as a Kindle eBook. First time was a hassle getting it right, but with proper formatting, I finally did get it on Amazon. Then I put it on Barnes & Noble. The marketing followup was a news release in my local paper, the Williamsport Sun-Gazette.

After a few months, I put the book on Smashwords, a dynamic up-and-coming eBook distributor. The Smashwords connection put the eBook out to all the remaining major outlets.

Knowing how to do it, I decided to help other folks get their manuscripts into “print.” That led to my next project: a Joomla site, Wilcox Publishing, offering my services and presenting my latest published eBooks. At the moment, there are 11 eBooks there, representing a somewhat eclectic collection of titles. I’m a “boutique publisher” now. 🙂

Now you know why and how I got into eBooks!
